Step Up And Support, “Shop With A Cop”

Let’s all step it up this year and support the “Shop With A Cop” program under the direction of the Zephyrhills Police Department. The ZPD is partnering with the Zephyrhills community to help collect school supplies and money for this effort.  This year more than ever, families are in need of assistance in providing basic clothing and school supplies for their children to attend school. The kids need Kinder Mats, crayons, pens, pencils, 3 ring binders, notebook paper, notebooks, composition books, pocket dictionaries, calculators, sandwich bags, hand sanitizer, wipes, tissues, backpacks (no wheels), and/or monetary donations for clothing.

Any business wishing to set up a collection box, donate gift cards or make charitable donations toward this cause, please contact Lori Tindall at 813-780-0050 ext 147.

Thank you for making Zephyrhills the caring community we all know and love. Together we CAN make a difference!

“Click It or Ticket Campaign”

In Florida, traffic crashes take the lives of thousands of people a year. Most of those who die on the road are not buckled up.  Law enforcement agencies across Florida are once again joining the  Click It or Ticket safety belt enforcement campaign.

During the crackdown, drivers and passengers will be ticketed if they are not buckled up.  If children under 18 are not properly protected, the driver gets the ticket.

The Zephyrhills Police Department has joined efforts with the Florida Department of Transportation, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol and our friends in local municipalities to bring awareness and enforcement to drivers within our community. We will be participatinjg in the Click it or Ticket safety belt enforcement campaign beginning March 1, 2010 through March 15, 2010.  For more information please contact Captain Jeffery McDougal at 813-780-0050.

Zephyrhills Police Department Accepting Applications for Citizens’ Police Academy

The Zephyrhills Police Department is accepting applicatons for the winter 2010 session of the Citizens’ Police Academy starting Wednesday, January 20th in the Community Services training room beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The Citizens’ Police Academy is designed to foster better understanding between citizens and the Police Department by informing citizens of the administrative philosophy, internal policies and guidelines, and principles of law and ethical conduct that govern the delivery of police services within our community.

The Citizens’ Police Academy curriculum is similar to recruit training for new police officers, with a mix of classroom and scenario/hands-on training on such topics as department functions, search and seizure laws, use of force, firearms training, crime prevention, domestic violence, criminal investigations, vice/narcotics operations and K-9 and special operations.  Citizens graduate with a better understanding of police officer training and decision-making, as well as day-to-day police operations. The classes are not intended to train participants to be police officers, but to give citizens a better understanding of law enforcement and the Zephyrhills Police Department.

The Citizens’ Police Academy will meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. for 6 weeks.  Enrollment is open to any citizen 18 years of age or older. Anyone interested in attending the Citizens’ Police Academy may call the Zephyrhills Police Department for an application at 813-780-0050 ext 147, or complete an application by coming in to the department and requesting one.

The class is limited to 20 students.  applications must be submitted by January 15, 2010.

The Zephyrhills Police Department’s “Shop With A Cop program” was a tremendous success this year. We were able to assist (74) children with school supplies, backpacks, and an average of $100.00 each for clothing prior to the start of school. School Resource Officers, Patrol Officers, T.A.C.T. Officers, Community Services personnel, and volunteers assisted with the program this year. Children were taken to Wal-mart and K-mart for the shopping portion of the program.

Left over school supplies were donated to Woodland Elementary School and West Zephyrhills Elementary schools.

K-9 “Gunner” Loved Pringles

K-9 Gunner

Memorial services were held today, Friday, August 14, 2009 at Zephyr Park for ZPD’s K-9 Gunner. In attendance was Gunners partner Officer Joe Rinaldo, his girlfriend Becky, family and many friends. In addition to several remarks from the podium, a 21 gun salute and presentation of the flag took place under partly cloudy skies. Several hundred people were in attendance in addition to police officers, K-9’s & their handlers, city officials and community leaders.  Zephyrhills Police Departments Chief of Police David Shears read a poem called, “Guardians of the Night” and it follows.

“Guardians of the Night”

Trust in me my friend for I am your comrade.  I will protect you with my last breath. When all others have left you and the loneliness of the night closes in, I will be at your side.

Together we will conquer all obstacles, and search out those who might wish harm to others.  All I ask of you is compassion, The caring touch of your hands.  It is for you that I will unselfishly give my life and spend my nights unrested. Although our days together may be marked by the passing of the seasons, know that each day at your side is my reward.

My days are measured by the coming and going of your footsteps.  I anticipate them at every opening of the door.

You are the voice of caring when I am ill.  The voice of authority when I’ve done wrong.

Do not chastise me unduly for I am your right arm.  The sword at your side. I attempt to do only what you bid of me.

I seek only to please  you and remain in your favor.

Together you and I shall experience a bond only others like us will understand.  When outsiders see us together, their envy will be measured by their disdain.

I will quietly listen to you and pass no judgement, nor will your spoken words be repeated. I will remain ever silent.

Ever vigilant, ever loyal and when our time together is done and you move on in the world, remember me with kind thoughts and tales.  For we were unbeatable, nothing passed among us undetected.

If we should meet again on another street I will gladly take up your fight. I am a Police Working Dog and together, We are guardians of the night.
